With introduction of the “Superstar” in 1969, adidas introduces itself to the world of basketball. The Superstar is the first low-top shoe made out of leather. A few years later, the shoe was worn by 75% of the players in the NBA. Immediately identifiable by its rubber toe box otherwise known as “Shell Toes.” Leather upper for durability and easy care. Synthetic material with fashionable surface structure. EVA insole for comfort. Midsole: Compression-molded EVA for lightweight cushioning. adiWEAR® outsole for best durability in high-wear areas. Herringbone pattern outsole for optimum traction.
In 1971, adidas went bold with the introduction of “The Americana.” The white body shoe featured Red & Blue Stripes representing the colours of the USA. The colours were also the symbol of the American Basketball Association otherwise known as the ABA, a professional basketball league founded in 1967. The shoe was constructed with a mesh upper featuring a leather toe box with micro-perforated leather lining providing a secure fit and increased ventilation. The sole featured a court-specific tread pattern for maximum traction and a durable rubber outsole provided shock absorbing structure. The Americana was re-issued in 2003…
As if winning six NBA titles, six MVP awards and two Finals MVP awards is not impressive enough, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar raised the bar for generations to come and still is the all-time leader for most All-Star games played, most All-Star selections points scored, minutes played, field goal attempts and field goals made. It’s his patented “sky hook” that will forever be remembered. Signing with adidas in 1976, Kareem endorsed the adidas Superstar which massively inflated the orders posted by the American distributors. Just signing the contract itself caused one problem: when 2.18m tall Kareem turned up in Landersheim at adidas France to sign, the hotel managers of the “Auberge” had to saw off the footboards from his bed to fit him in before he would be able to get a good night’s sleep… The “Jabbar” is made of a soft, supportive full-grain leather upper and a classic rubber herringbone outsole providing superior traction. High-traction tread pattern provides great grip on or off the court while mid-high construction provides extra ankle support.
The adidas Pro-model was first introduced in 1974. Its classic shell-toe delivers 360-degree ClimaCool® comfort and cooling for the entire foot. The shoe is currently constructed with an adiPRENE® and a fitFOAM™ midsole, a synthetic patent leather upper for durability and style; adiPRENE® in the forefoot maintains propulsion and efficiency. A fitFOAM™ compression-molded EVA midsole made of a visco-elastic foam which contours to your foot like a custom mold. Todays Pro-Model also features interchangeable 3-Stripes for customization.
